D&RGW #278 in Montrose

We have talked recently about the #278 on display in Cimaron. I received a private message asking about when it was in Montrose.

#278 was moved from Gunnison to Salida in late 1952. It was repainted there and donated to the City of Montrose. In April 1953 it arrived in Montrose on a standard gauge flat car and was placed on a short piece of track next to the Chamber of Commerce building on highway 550. Later in 1953....when the narrow gauge was taken out of Montrose, the caboose was donated and placed behind the locomotive. They remained that way until 1974 when they were moved to the bridge at Cimaron...and the box car was added.

During that 21 years in Montrose, the locomotive and caboose sat "open to the public". Both had various parts removed over the years, but remained in good shape.

The quality of these photos is BAD! They are some of the few slides that survived a flood about 6 years ago. Anyway....I'm posting bacause it's all new information to a lot of the younger folks.
