Here are a few from June 1968, including 476 on the Silverton Train at Hermosa, and some shots of 478 in freight service to Farmington and back
with the first loads to that location for the last year of service(1968)
I kinda grew up with these stacks, but thought they were kinda crappy. However they were not as bad as those D&S bear-traps they had later in my opinion. I think one of the engines with a diamond stack and a solid set of yellow coaches would be appropriate for the early 60's to 1980 on the Rio Grande. These engines with those coach colors also saw service over Cumbres on fantrips before the Grande sold to the states. Photos as follows:
(1) Hermosa, (2) 478 freight south of Carbon Junction, (3) Arriving in Farmington (4) Northbound at Bondad Tank, (5) After leaving empties at Carbon Junction, caboose hop just south of Durango at the end of the day. Film coverage in "Last Steam Freights 1968" including a couple shots on the Silverton line as well as the 478 and Ernie Robarts last freight to Farmington in Aug 68 with engine 483!!!
