It isn't dead, it is just in deep hibernation. The locomotive will not be restored to operating condition. The locomotive would be banned from UP tracks, eliminating quite a bit of mileage. The engine has no cars to pull and the insurance rates are too high anyway.
A cosmetic restoration is what is hoped for but money is needed for that. The museum did come up with donors who are paying tens of thousands of dollars to relocate two tracked air cushioned vehicles and one rail linear induction motor vehicle to the museum. These vehicles contributed to Pueblo's rail history and would be lost of not moved.
The powers that be know that the 2912 looks bad and what it restored but only some many things can be done at once.
