Western Union Wire Train

January 11, 2015 04:42PM
Folks,
In 1919 the Western Union Company put together a wire train to maintain their wires on the D&RGW & C&S.In about 1933 they gave the cars to the D&RGW. It is briefly mentioned in the Sloan Freight cars book.

Remarkably, some of the seven cars have survived:

The Colarado Railroad Museum has WU 298 coach which became D&RGW 0250, Before that it was Colorado & Northwestern 20. It is sitting on blocks at the museum. What a great candidate for trucks now that the museum has C&NW 30! A mixed train to display!

The Colorado Railroad Museum also has WU 302 box which was at Monarch, CO. It was restored by the museum as C & NW 1026.

The C&TS Railroad has the body of WU 301 coach which became D&RGW 0252. It lives under at tarp these days.

Does anyone have roster information for WU 300 which became D&RGW 0231?
Was it a Colorado & Northwestern coach before moving to the Western Union Wire Train? What was the fate of the car?

I have to commend both the CRRM and the C&TS for their recent passenger truck projects!

Thanks for your thoughts.
