Greg; I've been going to Colorado NG Country ever
chance I got since 1958. Some years I rode with the Rocky Club and then went back in the fall and rode with the Alamosa Kiawinis Club " Fall Color Caravan". Plus the 2/76 trip to chase the OW. While I was there we chased out old ROW and historic points like the Alpine Tunnel which I have visited twice. The 2nd trip being an overnite campout in the telegrapg office.
Over the years I have seen Chalk Creek go from a
wilderness entered on a beautiful old ROW to a
well populated area accessible the year around
with good roads and bridges and a County Zoning commission that will allow no cabins to be built.
Only year around residences.
In the 30plus years I have been going to Hatteras
and the Outer Banks, again sometimes twice per year, I have seen the island go from the little country store type with no light on the porch at
night to The super-markets with parking lots lit up like daytime.
From Corolla to Nags Head the island is grossly overbuilt and is a disaster waiting to happen.
From Nags Head south the Park Service controls most of the land until you get to the towns south of the Pea Island Refuge. South of there it's hit and miss.Ocracoke is mostly Park Service land.
This lack of land to expand to is what is getting the motels, hotels and campgrounds cut up into lots for private homes. These homes are beyond the reach of the majority of the people. I'm
looking at a "Home Builder's Guide" that came in last weeks Outerbanks Sentinel. There are a few houses in the $150,000 range but most are around $500,000 and there several in the 1,000,000 and up range.
As for Chama, recently there was a list of postings about where to eat. Some sounded pretty good so maybe the advertising is falling short? Let's hope it's something that simple and that someone takes care of it.
I'm like you, I hope to have Colorado on the 2002
travel list.
Jim
