Those shop men worked very cheaply, and did a good job as less than
$1 per mile per locomotive is a number that any steam owner would die for, even at pro-rated increase to todays dollars.
You can do a Goggle Book search and read the 1885 1st Annual report of RR Commissioner for some also interesting data.
