The remains of this mill are still in place--several concrete foundations, along with a chain link fence that separates the mill site from the highway. A number of years ago, there were several signs posted indicating that the site is radioactive, but they have disappeared. The Primos tram terminal, several miles down stream and just past Sawpit is also radioactive, but when we had the contract to partially restore that structure for the BLM, we were told that "short term exposure would pose no risk." Sure. Radium was the main mineral being processed that caused later problems. The mines are across the river high up on the mountain sides, and the picture was probably taken from one of the many mines that line the west side of the river canyon.
