This message was prompted by a recent discussion on the Mount Washington Cog Railroad's adoption of d****l locomotives. As that thread had actually hijacked another about a different railroad I thought I would start a new thread.
There are modern steam cog locomotives operating on a number of cog railroads in Europe, manufactured in the 1990s by the Swiss company SLM. The steam locomotive activities of this company have now been taken over by a new company named DLM, which continues steam loco development.
These locos are designed to be single manned, and can be connected to an external electic steam boiler so that it doesn't need anybody to raise steam in the small hours of the morning.
A good description can be found on
The Ultimate Steam Page.
I would much rather travel with a traditional coal burner, but one of these modern locomotives is to my mind far better than a d****l.
