Operationally, it's not that much different from running a doubleheader. Saturday's train was only a few cars over what 2 big engines could pull, so none of the engines worked very hard. We all ran with wide open throttles and the reverse lever down a notch from the highest place the engine would run. With long trains all the "sags" in the grade disappear. Wherever you are, part of the train is in a steep spotm part is in a sag, so it equals out.
Today we had 17 cars - 452 tons. 2 engines are good for 460 tons. It was a much harder pull, 497 and 487 earned their keep today.
