There quite similar. They are both based on the NKP's S class berks (1934), a derivative of the C&O's T-1 2-10-4s (1930). The biggest differences being that the 1225 has a fabricated frame while the 765 as a cast frame...and that the 1225 has slightly larger diameter cylinders.

The 1225 has typically been used more for smaller excursions on regional lines while the 765 has been mostly used in large excursions on the Class 1s. It is always special when the two are together.

In addition to the 765 and 1225, the 2716 and 759 have also run in excursion service, and the 763 will be returned to steam in the near future...there are 18 of these locomotives left. They are pretty close to ideal for excursion service. They have light enough axle loadings to go most places. They typically have very few of the sort of slow orders and restrictions that the various excursion 4-8-4s encounter...but still can pull heavy trains faster the the legal track speed. (the 765 has hit 79mph with 34 passenger cars)
