The 480s were not placed in service in numerical order, but 480 was the first one used.

NEW LOCOMOTIVES IN USE ON D&RGW
Number 480, first of the new freight locomotives to be put in use was placed in service this week. Mister Broderick, trainmaster at Gunnison, went out with the new locomotive on an inspection trip. The new engine is larger and more powerful than any now in service.

Sargents News
The big new freight engine number 480 made its first trip to Gunnison from Salida last Wednesday.

Salida
It may be of interest to note that the narrow gauge portion of the Salida Division has strengthened its power by receiving four of the new K-36 class engines numbers 480, 482, 484, and 487 which locomotives are now assigned in freight service between Salida and Gunnison doing very nicely according to reports from our road foreman of equipment.

Gunnison
The new K-36 type of engines have arrived and are giving excellent service between Gunnison and Salida. Turntable at Gunnison is too short for these engines, so we have to turn them on the wye and work them outside. We hope other arrangements will be made before cold weather sets in. Bridge and Building outfit are to rebuild our ashpit this month, which is welcome news, and also will make repairs to other buildings while here.
