The train in question was operated probably in June or July of 1966. It was 484 and two of the small water cars and a caboose. I guess you call that a work train. We chased it to Gato and left. I don't recall if the trains destination was Gato, or it went beyond there, but since we couldn't go much further that was all we did. Also if it helps a day or two prior to this a work train operated to Farmington, which my dad photographed while my brother and I rode the Silverton train.
It was strange to see 484 with only the two water cars. I seem to recall something about needing the water in Gato for the Indians, or for the tank, but I'm not sure I got the true story. I was a teenager back then, and didn't always get my facts from dad correct...Come to think of it I still don't always get my facts straight
