Hey ,Sean ,how are you ? The first suicide by steam locomotive in Narrow Gauge Country as about a century ago in Telluride ,when a well-dressed young man with red hair suddenly put his neck on a rail in front of a departing passenger train . He was never indentified .The story appeared in Josie Moore Crum's excellent book on the Rio Grande Southern . I believe in the 1960s there were one or two attempted suicides where distraught people rammed into locomotives around Durango .
In 1986 Bob Huffman ,the road forman for the D&SNG , slipped under a car while stepping off a moving train at Rockwood . A battery box under concession car #566 crushed his rib cage and cut his aorta .He passed away as a family friend , conductor John Nolan ran up to him , calling his name .He hardly had a scratch on him , despite the massive internal injuries . Tragically ,Bobby's older brother Bill was killed last year in an auto accident .
