Russo, my theory is that the D&SNG schedules Railfest for the week when the 3rd (used to be 4th) train stops running for the season. This makes a whole lot of sense since that week is when the railroad has both (1) an extra schedule slot available for special train movements *and* (2) seasonal employees are still in town.
Consequently, delaying Railfest to coincide with a non-D&SNG event probably doesn't make good business sense for the D&SNG.
Furthermore, Railfest is heavily dependent on D&SNG volunteers. Having it over a holiday weekend would probably be a deal-breaker for them.
