I don't know if the article is serious about the train beating the bicyclist twice in 37 but if it is true I had the pleasure to be on the train one of those years. May of 1996 was my first ride on the D&S and it began to rain, then sleet and finally snow by the time we got to Silverton. The next day we saw a newspaper photo from Denver that showed countless bicycles littering the road as the riders had left their bikes and gotten into cars in vans to avoid the cold. It was so bad that many of the riders got hypothermia. It certainly made for a memorable trip and I am somewhat surprised my wife has been willing to go back but she is usually a pretty good sport in the end.
