Contrary to other opinions, the 44 was always my favorite of the two FI de CA locomotives. I have very good memories of a lot of weeks of work with Roy Breffle, Floyd Cothran, Harry DeVore, Bud DeVore and others.
I was the regular fireman up there at the Loop for the first two seasons. When did the photographers show up? On my days off. The Denver Post did a feature article on Roy Breffle and it was Greg Kester who got his mug in the paper. Greg LePak included a photo of the 44 in one of his books and who was firing? Jerry Breffle (Roy's son).
Oh well..... I guess that makes me the "mystery" regular up there.
