Don't Hold Your Breath

September 12, 2001 08:47AM
The biggest problem with this is that what happened yesterday is only the latest and most horrible act in an endless struggle that has been going on since Biblical times.
We will not be able to fix it, we will not be able to solve it, and we can't make it better.
The only thing we can do is try to find those responsible and eliminate them in the hope that we will be protected from the next attack. These people are not fighting any longer with just rocks and pointy sticks. Some of them have figured out how to get the job done.
I would not be at all surprised to learn eventually that the number of those who conspired to perpitrate and participated in yesterdays actions does not exceed 100 to 300 in number, and may be far less. And, at least a dozen of them are dead, martyrs to a Holy cause. As Americans, we do not understand this from a conceptual perspective.
What all this means for us at home will be further, and more intrusive innefective "security" at airports (does anyone really think you are going to catch suicidal terrorists armed with razor-sharp plastic knives?) and probaly higher gas prices.
We can hope, and we can pray for "justice", but don't hold your breath. We don't know how to fight this one, and anything we have ever done in our history to this point will not work.
Be patient, this is going to take a while.
