Rogers E. M. Whitaker was an editor for the New Yorker Magazine. He traveled by train, all over the world and probably accumulated more rail mileage than anyone, before or since. He wrote a book about his travels, titled "All Aboard With E. M. Frimbo."
When he died, he asked that his ashes be scattered on Cumbres Pass, as he felt the C&TS line over Cumbres Pass was the finest train ride in the world. The brass plate marks the spot where his ashes were spread.
He was my father's compartment mate on several trips through eastern Europe. Dad reports that he was an excellent and entertaining traveling companion.
