You did the right thing. The old boiler on the Climax was in HORRIBLE shape. A former shop foreman once tried to run the engines on compressed air to see if they would turn over and discovered a hole in the mudring you could stick your pinkie finger thru. The firebox had 52 staybolts replaced with rod stock welded to both sheets. There were so many questionable patches in the boiler that it still amazes me that the Pennsylvania inspectors hadn't condemned her before they did.
The Climax project is coming along, we are still making plans, collecting paperwork and stockpiling necessary parts. And yes, the boiler we got from Sumpter Valley will fit. It turns out that the only measurement that is different between the "old" and "new" boilers is 4 inches in length in the firebox.
