The photo shows a portion of a locomotive crown sheet. The locomotive was in regular daily service. When brought into the shop for a monthly boiler wash, several crown stays were leaking. A very astute shop foreman deduced something not proper and was able to pound a screwdriver through the crown sheet adjacent to the staybolt from the fireside. Be advised this boiler was operating at 180 psi daily before it failed the screwdriver test.
