497 hasn't been across the RR since its derailment last fall. It was decided to keep it over on this side (as a helper) until some additional track work was finished this summer. We didn't set out to send 497 across. the intent was to have 463 run across and use 497 to help it up the hill. The train was 8 cars, too much for 463, but maximum for 497. 463 came up with a case of leaky flues that morning, 487 had to get a firebox leak fixed, 489 was in Antonito, so 497 got to go alone.
The 490's were noted for being stiffer than the 480's and harder on the track - one of the reasons the D&S ditched 497. While the main part of the running gear is identical to a 480, the trailer truck is a different (and stiffer) design, and the trailer truck axle is about a foot further back making the wheelbase a bit longer.
Actually the 497 did pretty well. So well, it gets to do it again tomorrow. 489's boiler wash is taking a bit longer than planned.
