Craig raises a good point....it is good to keep all this in context. I saw at least two derailments while chasing DRGW freights in the 60's, and evidence of many more. While working for the SP I saw a whole bunch more. Derailments, especially minor ones, are common and delt with routinely. On the other hand, getting all four driving axles of a steam engine on the ground is a real pain. But again, I saw that happen in Farmington on the DRGW....due to ice....the 480 if I remember correctly. And speaking of the 480, I just saw it go by my hotel window here in Durango.
None of the issues this weekend on the C&TS seem to be serious, just a combination of small things. Rerailing the 489 will be a pain, but should be done quickly, and the track repaired. Hopefully the 489's trailing truck can be repaired quickly.
My greatest sympathy goes to the reservation office that has to deal with the passengers. Heck, freight was always easier to handle than passengers because the freight never complained.
