When I switched for them in the 60s, ATSF rules required all yard engines to face west.
So in the El Paso area, the engineer was on the side opposite all the cut levers. I don't remember if yard firemen were gone by then.
Along with summer heat, getting anything done there quickly and safely was a nightmare.
