I believe Larry Salone was smart enough when he took over in 2007 to realize that the Government Steamtown was not the place to feed money to get the K-4 rebuilt! He is getting a quarter roundhouse built and will move the K-4 into Altoona for a final rebuild. New boiler steel on the Belpare is needed to fill the new federal requirements of the new safety factor.
There have been reports of search for ties to rebuild a railroad, and then the word came of it being a narrow gauge tie request. It sounds like they did some homework.
What if some day the K-4 pulls excursions train from Altoona or Harrisburg to Mt. Union to connect with an EBT passenger excursion to Robertsdale (or Orbisonia) and return? Now, that would make a “Silverton” or “White Pass” equivalent for an equal success of the narrow gauge style railroad. That would solve the one problem of the EBT, being far away from the riding public.
