FEBT Rockhill work session May 2-3, 2009

April 27, 2009 08:19PM avatar
The third FEBT Rockhill work session of 2009 will be held on Saturday and
Sunday, May 2-3, 2009.

We will work from 9 am to 5 pm Saturday and from 9 am to 4 pm Sunday. We'll
meet at the Rockhill shops at 9 am.

MEALS
Breakfast both days and dinner will be available at the Iron Rail B&B,
across the street from the depot. Lunch will be offered by the Iron Rail on
Saturday and by RTY on Sunday. Please RSVP to me by Thursday evening, April
30, at 10 p.m. if you plan to join us for any of these meals.

WEATHER
The current forecast is for weather in the 50s Saturday and 60s Sunday,
but you know how changeable the central mountains can be in the springtime!
So visit _www.accuweather.com_ (http://www.accuweather.com) and check the
Rockhill zip code, 17249, for the latest weather as we approach the date.

COMBINE 14
The car crew will begin inletting the side sills for the new spliced
replacement timbers. We will also take up more of the floor to better evaluate
the center and intermediate sills. The steel crew will also finishing the
bumper rod installation. Steve Jacobs and Lee Rainey will lead this part of
the project.

STEEL CREW
The steel crew will begin cleanup and evaluation of the combine trucks.
The crew will finish using the oak boards by the Sand House to replace the
rest of the floor along the west wall of the loco shop.

BOILER HOUSE
The Boilerhouse Rats will work to complete the fabrication and
installation of the new main beam, jack up the roof trusses a final 2 inches,
and
permanently bolt the trusses to the beam. If enough hands are available, some
preliminary work will start on the stack base
stabilization, also. Jim Bacon will lead this project. Heavy-duty hand
power tools are useful on this crew. Remember their motto: anything smaller
than a 4x4 is just trim.

MAIN SHOPS
The Glass Rattlers will be pulling sashes from the Car Shop and Boiler
House to be rehabilitated for later re-installation. If nights are above 50
degrees (does not look promising), they will continue work on windows on the
west wall of the Boiler Shop and Machine Shop as well as trim work. They
will also start painting trim on the Sand House and Loco Shop. If it is too
cool to paint and putty, they will work on preparing the rotted Boiler Shop
wall post for jacking and sill repair. They will also continue working on
lowering the grade between the Loco Shop and the Privy and begin preparing
for post and sill work on the Loco Shop west and south walls. They will also
begin batten repairs on the Sand House south and west walls. It sounds like
carpenter tools are the order of the day for this job. Chris Coleman will
lead this project.

GARAGE
If flooring lumber and our 2009 paint order arrive in time, here is the
plan: Half of the crew will install new floorboards, wedges, and a backing
strip along north side of the floor to capture loose ends of siding and close
up some remaining holes. Concurrently, the other half of the crew will
paint the walls, eaves, and window frame. If time permits, extra stone will
be placed in front of the east doors to provide a gentle transition from
ground to floor height. Bill Adams will lead the work on the garage.

GROUND RULES
To take part you must be 18 and a member of the FEBT (or join the FEBT at
the work site.) These are insurance requirements. We are guests of the
railroad and need to behave accordingly.

Last-minute walk-ons are always welcome at our sessions, but if possible,
drop me an email in advance to let me know that you are coming. It helps
with the planning.

See you there!
Lee
