This machine, christened "Big Joe Tampiere," is a product of the fertile mind of WW&F CMO Jason Lamontagne. He combined a commercially available (bought it on eBay!) electric/hydraulic pallet lift with a lot of pipe, four pneumatic tampers, gears, welding, duct tape and baling wire, resulting in a machine that saved a lot of us significant sore backs over the past weekend. We thoroughly tamped nearly 900 feet of track, and we could have done more except that the ballast supply couldn't keep up with us! The WW&F is now approximately 2.4 miles long.
If you haven't seen the WW&F Railway Museum, you need to come to Maine and see what a lot of gumption, ingenuity and hard work has wrought. Later this summer, the new boiler for no. 9 will be delivered to Sheepscot, the next step in returning this iconic locomotive to service. In addition, a Model T Ford railcar similar to Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes railcar no. 2 will debut.
