Durango, August 1965

April 13, 2009 12:24AM
The first shot #492, on the Durango turntable, being readied for the Eastbound trip.

Climbing thru Bayfield, wet weeds created a traction problem and it was soon discovered the hostler had not filled the sand dome of #492.
The fireman tried scraping what was let into the pipe but to no avail and the train stalled. No radios in those days, so the head end brakeman walked to the nearest phone and told Durango what happened. An old green Dodge pick up was dispatched with a load of sand and a couple buckets.
