Looking at my copy of Califonia & Nevada RR by Eric Hanson the only locomotives owned were two 2-6-0 tender locomotives. The book Narrow Gauge to the Redwoods by Dickinson has equipment photos of the Sonoma Magnesite and none of its equipment looks remotely like what the mystery photo shows. The vegetation in the photo "appears" to be after a major fire. It is also possible that this was a scrubby, chaparral type vegetation as found in California and into Mexico. I'm still of the opinion that it was a warm location as there appears to be a small door open on the side of the cab ahead of the gangway and that could be for extra cooling of the crew.
