At least up in the Tacoma Washington area, they were referred to as "track torpedoes", at least on the Northern Pacific, up into the early 1970's.

Dad always brought a few home for the 4th of July. We had a dock at our island place, and had a very careful procedure for setting them off. The dock was about 8 feet off the beach at low tide. We'd set a torpedo on a big rock, pick up another large rock, carry it back to the end of the dock and struggle our way out the 30 feet or so carrying the boulder (we were only 8 or 10 years old). You'd stand there, aiming the rock, prepared for a loud boom, drop the rock, and ......miss! So, you'd go back down and repeat, sometimes 2 or 3 times. About the time you relaxed, CABOOM, and you'd dang near jump off the dock! They'd echo up and down the passage for 20 or 30 seconds, it was great fun!
