Typically improper firing of a locomotive to provide smoke does not "hurt" the firebox. There is usually sooo much fire in the box that it will not damage it. Damage to a firebox generally occurs from having too little fire on the side sheets, door sheet, tube sheet, etc... If the fire becomes too thick or to much coal is added at one time, the temperature of the firebox changes rapidly and it can cause damage. Just my two cents.
