After the Silverton agent's position was eliminated, and I don't know the date--sometime in the 60s, I think--Rio Grande Motorway continued to use the Silverton depot for storing freight. Someone local had the key and if Motorway missed you for a delivery, they would leave the shipment in the depot. When the depot was donated to the historical society in 1969, there was still a rejected shipment of newsprint for the Silverton Standard that was damaged in transit stored in the building. When Allen Nossaman ran out of paper at one point, he managed to salvage enough of that paper to make his print run. Motorway had daily service to Silverton clear up to their demise in the late 70s--now we have once a week truck service from RAC Transport.
