I was working in the roundhouse the winter of the fire. Picking through the remains of that mess in the days following the fire was one of the most miserable and depressing jobs I've ever done. At the time of the fire I was buildng a special machine to re-grind the large radius slot in the Walschaert's valve gear links and the matching link blocks for the K-36's and K-28's. That machine was the only one in the machine shop to survive the fire--all others were scrapped out. The machine, while a bit crude, did a passable job on reconditioning the link slots and link block radii and may still be in use today.
