If the engine had a pump at all would depend on the kind of service it was being used for. Forneys that were used on sugar plantation railroads, small mining operations and logging roads may not have air brakes at all. Instead they would probably have steam brakes on the engine and hand brakes (or even no brakes) on the cars. Another possibility was the Eames vacuum brake system that was used on a number of small insular narrow gauge roads,
