Thread Hijack Alert! RGS Track

I may be mistaken, but I get the impression that RGS tracks were fairly well built/maintained. What was the condition of RGS trackage towards the end? The fact that they ran K-27s late in the game makes me think the track had to be in fairly decent shape.
