Well, as we all know, K-27's, K-28's, K-36's, C-18's and c-19's have all run since the D&RGW ceased operation in 1968. However, since then only 1 K-37, 497, has operated, and it of course is out of service and stored inside the Chama roundhouse.
I would bet money that some of the C-19's have run longer since they were retired (thinking Knotts) then the K-37's ran when in service
I was wondering however, what is the chance that a K-37 will ever be restored? What is the mechanical state of the various K-37's. I know both 491 and 499 look very good in their display locations, but what sort of shape are they in? Is there maybe a better market for the K-37's outside Colorado and New Mexico? They are too big for Knott's, but what about the White Pass and Yukon? What about the Huckleberry railroad in Flint? They operate 464 almost every day, think that maybe 497 could find a nice home there.
I with 463 next in line, and others like 483 out of service for many years, and the K-37's overall being down since they were retired, what will ever happen to them? Are they doomed to be static displays until the end of time?
