Number 40 has always been one of my favorite engines. I first made her acquaintance, on the Loop, when I was living in Saudi Aurora in the late 80's.
A few years later, my wife and I hiked the Chilkoot trail from Dyea (Near Skagway) to Lake Bennet, and rode the White Pass back to Skagway. It was sure nice of the White Pass to provide a special car just for the backpackers!
On the way down the hill the conductor mentioned that the following day was a steam special back up to Lake Bennet behind #40, mostly for "locals", as no cruise ships were in town. Of course we had to do that!
What a great little engine! Hauling 4 coaches, she absolutely stormed up that hill with a bark as loud as an engine twice her size.
Unfortunatly, she was taken out of service at Fraser due to an overheating bearing, but she provided a great ride up the hill.
Great train ride, great backpacking trip!
