As far as direct or indirect Walschaerts, I have seen b&W photographs of older compounds with the rear (hp) cylinders having direct and the front (lp) having indirect. Really easy to spot with indirect having the link block below center for forward motion and indirect having the lick block in the upper half. Take a look in some books and you'dd spot this.
