Virgil C. Staff R.I.P.

December 26, 2008 07:21PM
I just today learned on another site that Virgil Staff passed away early this morning. He had not been well since a fall a couple of months back.
To mention his passing is apropos here...Virgil and his wife LaVada visited the Colorado ng in the 60's. One of the mediums that he used to record it was 16mm movies. Besides the usual lineside runbys, Virgil got a lot of human interest footage showing rails working, cooking meals, etc.. He admonished me when we first met to include people in my photography & I am especially glad now that I listened and heeded his advice.
Virgil was a character & I say this with all respect. He delighted in throwing out off-the-wall statements just to see what kind of a response they'd get.
I first met Virgil at a Pacific Locomotive Association meeting in Berkeley in 1966. He & LaVada had just returned from Mexico shooting and taping steam. He strode into the room with this huge sombrero on his head and a lit rasty looking (and smelling) crooked cigar in his mouth.
Back around 1996, he passed along the late John Hungerford's slide collection to me, a most generous gift. Virgil was not hung up on possessions for himself and was a very thoughtful sort of person.
