Narrow Gauge in the South Pacific

September 22, 2007 08:49AM
I had the opportunity to spend a couple of days in Nadi, Fiji this past week, so used a hired driver to follow the rails of the rather extensive sugar cane railroad that operates out of the mill @ Lautoka on Fiji. It is really narrow between the rails, maybe even less than 2 Ft. While there used to be an 0-6-2T used for complimentary passenger service, I did not see it, but there was an 0-4-2T w/Walschaert motion on display at the mill.
Rail appears to be much heavier than is needed for the light weight of the six-wheel side rod diesels and small cane bogies. Also noted that all bridges that were seen are steel truss types, not wooden trestles. IIRC, milling season is almost 6 months long & runs into November. This is a fascinating pike with spurs everywhere going out into various cane fields. Quite easy to chase, the people there are among the friendliest on the planet.
I apologise for no photos as I used up all of my film on Guadalcanal during the previous week.
