Recalling a "Goose Up" in 2001 at the CRRM, a light snow had fallen the night before leaving 1-1/2" on the rail head. No.7 would not make it up the 3-1/2% grade east of the roundhouse. We used sand (No.7 has sanders) but to no avail. Two volunteers with shovels scraped the snow off the rail head, then the Goose made it up the grade. Momentum carried it to the water tank where the track is level and still had snow on the railhead. Again, No.7 would not start untill the rails were again scraped clear of snow. Granted, there was no weight in the passenger box, but it can best be described as slippery. I understand that a substantial snow fall on the RGS would require a locomotive to clear the way for the Geese.
