National King Coal, in Hay Gulch near Hesperus (west of Durango) sells coal to the DSNGRR, C&TSRR, Heber, Northern Nevada (Ely--a long trucking). The size of coal is called "Locomotive coal", because it is in large chunks. In 2007, DSNGRR bought 3500 tons. The other railroads bought a combined total of 2000 tons. Some coal even is shipped as as far as into (old) Mexico. The biggest buyers are manufactures of cement and lime. A few adit has been opened recently, a mile or so west of the the first mine.
