Re: 451 boiler explosion

No. 451 suffered a boiler explosion on ~September 1, 1923 ~.25 mile east of Shavano tank, on Marshall Pass. The boiler was torn off the frame, and the engine crew were killed.
An account of the accident, extracted from the Salida Mail of September 2, 1923 appears in *The Cavalcade of Railroads in Central Colorado,* by George G. Everett, published in 1966 by golden Bell Press, Denver, Colorado. The article is on pp. 97-98, an account of the engineer's funeral is on pp. 98-99.
According to the article quoted by Mr. Everett, the accident took place at 8:15 AM, on a Monday, killing engineer Robert Thomas "Tom" Dobbie instantly, and fatally injuring fireman Elmer E. Lindsley. Lindsley was relatively new to the railroad, reportedly having entered engine service six weeks earlier. The paper reported that the boiler would not be toueched until the government inspected it, but that the running gear for the locomotive was moved to the shop on its own wheels.
A photo on p. 97 shows the boiler on flat car 06048, with a very clearly failed crown sheet, which appears to have failed at the front end. This would be consistant with the water being too low to cover the front of the crown sheet while climbing the 4% grade.
Walter R. Borneman reports the accident in his *Marshall Pass: Denver & Rio Grande Gateway to the Gunnison Country,* Colorado Springs, 1980; pp. 77, 78, 80. Borneman cites the September 7, 1923 issue of the Gunnison News-Champion as his source. Borneman quotes the Gunnison paper as stating the accident occurred on the evening of Sudnay, September 2, 1923. [Anyone got a perpetual calendar handy?]
I believe the Colorado RR Museum has one of the flattened gauges from the cab, picked up years later a the accident site.
I've looked in the ICC Accident Reports, (our university library has good coverage for this period) and did not find any summary of this accident in the ususal quarterly summaries of accident reports. Nor did we have a full report by itself. Anyone have the full scoop according to the ICC?
