Something in the range of 11,000 to 12,000 horsepower ...

844(4) had been in Omaha for a major overhaul when 4449 was delayed there for two weeks to turn the wheels due to excessive wear on the front drivers.* U.P. upped the priority on 844(4) so she could run with 4449 when heading back to Cheyenne with a short train showing off some of their newest freight equipment; 4449 continued on from Cheyenne with a diseasel "helper", and rejoined the Freedom Train in Ogden.

* It was later determined that the springs on the lead truck had sagged during 4449's fifteen or sixteen years on a display track that was more than a little concave, so the lead drivers were taking more than their share of both engine weight and side thrust on curves.
