As mentioned it was no suprise that the timing was off, see the recent post on timing and setting valves with admission only. The springs that holds the sets of 3 piece packing in place had broken and resulted in that flaw. And the rod brass was new, but the major clanking being heard was from the right side wrist pin which was corrected. Since then it has been and still is in service about 29-30 days a month and has been the least difficult engine of the season.
