"Howdy .... Here is a picture at Gato over Memorial Week End of 1960, taken by my late friend Charlie Max. It was a 3 day trip running from Alamosa to Durango the 1st day, Silverton & return the 2nd, and Durango to Alamosa the final day. Oh how those were so much fun !!!"
"Charlie Max, a long time club member who also was it's President back in 1973 & 1974 (two terms)."
"Charlie was born in Ohio, and one summer at the age of 14 along with his Brother Paul they decided to run away from home. During the night they hoped into an empty box car on the Erie RR and headed West. For several months their travels took them to Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington, then heading East they were home in time to begin school. He wrote a soft cover book about all these adventures titled "Teenage Hobo In The1930's." Until recently the Colorado RR Museum did have copies of the book for sale, if not I can give those interested an address for ordering

"Charlie lived in Lakewood, Colorado and was a retired "tin smith." Railroading & travel were his hobbies. After retirement He and Mrs Max made many tours to several foreign countries, always to see what railroading was like in other places."
