The recent discussion about the array of ungainly patches on the smoke box door of the 482 in the picture I took last weekend motivated me to search this picture out. A comment was made that to take that door off would require removing all the bolts and wasn't that a lot of work. Well, imagine what the 470s require with the air pump hanging on that door. It's simple--to do any work on the tubes or superheater tubes, the door gets unbolted and the door typically comes off. I took this picture 40 years ago in October 1966 in the Alamosa roundhouse showing work in progress on one of the 470s. I've puzzled since why the work was happening in the roundhouse rather than the main repair building that was situated along side the roundhouse and that would have had more working room.
