I usually manage to exercise enough good judgment to stay out of Payton Place type flaps on the boards where I participate, but...
First of all Casey - best of luck with your new website. I sincerely hope that you can make it be what you want, but I expect you'll find that it's not as easy as you might think. Little flame wars happen, and when they do, it's hard not to annoy one side or the other. One camp will claim you're too heavy-handed and are doing too much (Censorship! First Amendment rights!), while the other will claim you're not doing enough (you're letting things get too "mean and nasty"). It's really hard to win at this game, and I often wonder why Don puts up with it all.
That said, I also have to agree with John Cole. "Everyone" is not leaving. Most of us have no issues here whatsoever. Dust-ups, like the recent one, happen, but on balance I find this a good place to be with knowledgeable, level headed folks regularly posting (along with the inevitable few hotheads and the occasionally clueless). When it starts to get personal, I simply stop reading/participating and the problem mostly goes away.
While I don't know the specifics of your issues, I do have to leave you with a final thought about what you've chosen to do here. It seems to me rather "mean and nasty" and in fact downright unethical, to come back to a group like this after leaving it and use the resources Don provides here to make a passing final criticism of the group, pass judgment, advertise your alternative and then bug out again. Sorry, but that leaves a very bad taste in my mouth.
Again, I sincerely wish you nothing but the best of luck, and I hope you take my criticism in the spirit in which it's given.
Scott
