I am surprised the K-37's were as successful as they were. It has been my experience that anytime you cobble up something like a K-37 it doesn't work well.
K-36 running gear attached to a standard gauge boiler, tender, etc. Of course it wouldn't track as well, etc.
But they sure were nice looking (beauty is in the eye of the beholder) locomotives. I remember being a little boy when my grandfather and I made our first and my only trip to Chama. He let me stand and look at the 492 for a good 30 minutes.
It and the 478, which I rode behind on our D&S ride that trip - it was still under DRGW control, and my favorite DRGW locomotives.
Of course we spent almost the entire day in the Chama yard looking at everything.
