the valve chests all face outward, shays had one facing the cab the other 2 facing forward. THis engine also has Walscharts valve gear and teh gaps in teh crank are all even unlike the shay wich has a larger forward space. In addition , the crank bed on this engine is made of 3 seperate sections instead of a single casting liek a shay which made for easy replacement and less failure of the crank bed due to the larger spacing in teh forward section.
