I love chime whistles. But I enjoy hearing a hooter on the little locos, because I would guess most pre-1900 locomotives were delivered with them as standard equipment. I would guess Baldwin built the F&CC locomotives with the least expensive whistles of the time, and so they probably had hooters. IIRC, the D&RGW installed a three chime whistle on No.315 in the 1930's. So the restored locomotive could probably be accurate with either the three chine or the hooter.
We are all used to the bigger mikes, which had chime whistles as standard equipment. But how appropriate would a three chime sound on E&P EUREKA? So, a vote of thanks to the Knotts people for allowing the use of the appropriate D&RG hooter on 315 for this year's Rail Fest. Next time, we'll probably be hearing the three chime whistle, and that will be fine. But for now, she probably sounds as she did for most of her service life. Kind of a nice historical feature.
